How to Make Ryan Gosling Your Valentine

Hey girl, settle down, Ryan Gosling isn't really going to be your Valentine (damn that, Eva Mendes) but here is a great line up of his movies that will make you fall in love with him all over again. Because honestly, even if you are in a relationship, how can you deny this beautiful man who cares about your feelings? Oh, also I'm not including The Notebook because that is too obvious and expected, I'm offering better for my readers. So grab your favorite girls, some good wine and snacks and curl up on the couch, then get ready to swoon.

All photos from IMDb
So here's the proper lineup for a night in with your girls and the man of our dreams. He'll make you laugh and cry and really think in these and the crescendo of these movies will probably break your heart. Oh, man. Happy Galentine's Day.

Lars and the Real Girl
Stick with me on this one. Ryan Gosling is not hot in this movie but he plays such a funny and precious role that it'll make your little heart melt. Plus, it's best to start off your night less dramatic. He's a little sweetheart as Lars and you cannot help but love his quirky ways.

Half Nelson
This role, I think, really shows his range as an actor. He's a mess and all put together at the same time and plays a teacher, which come one, who didn't have a teacher crush at least once?

Crazy Stupid Love
One of my favorite movies of all time. Not a total chick flick either because most of the plot is Ryan's character getting Steve Carell's to "man up." However, one of the greatest scenes is when he's with Emma Stone and she says to him, "God it's like you're Photoshopped." And yeah, yeah, he looks like he is. He plays a very wise-ass character who is really just a big softy, you'll be in love right away.

Blue Valentine
Personally, I think this is better than The Notebook. Yeah, I said it. You'll laugh at his singing, you'll cry over their love, and you'll certainly finish all the wine. So raw and beautiful. Trust me on this one.

Chels & the City Favorites

Happy Monday, friends! For the November Blogathon, today's prompt is to share your 3 favorite posts from your archives. (You'll notice that three is the theme of the week.) So here are three posts that I think are some of my best, and oddly enough, there is one from each year that my blog has been around, which was unplanned but a nice little surprise for myself.

2014 - Bad Things Happen When You Wear Sweatpants In Public
The story of an unfortunate event that I, of course, blamed on the fact that I was wearing sweatpants in public while it happened. My one and only fashion rule is to never wear sweats/pajama pants in public and I feel like the universe was getting back at me for shaming people who do. Lesson learned.

2013 - Hazard Yet Forward
A note to the Seton Hill University community after a serious tragedy. I graduated from SHU in 2011 and it will always have my heart, so this post was important for me to write and is one of my most-viewed of all time. It was one of those posts that you promote once by posting the link on Facebook and it was shared and passed on a countless number of times. I hope that means that the women involved and their families were among those views and that it helped them heal a little bit.

2012 - Cupid: as portrayed by Chelsea
I love this post. It was one of my first posts on this blog and I think I nailed it haha It's actually a really long post but I wanted it to be worth the read. I came up with date night ideas for people in the Pittsburgh area for Valentine's Day and based each idea on the Five Love Languages. Good, right? Like, you wish you were following my blog back then good. At the time, my readers were pretty much just my friends and family and I cannot tell you how many texts/calls I've received since then about people asking me to help them plan a night out or date night in the city, and they reference this post. Thanks, friends, I'm here for you!

Do you have favorite posts from your own blog?
Or a favorite from mine that's not mentioned?

Fashion Forward Fridays: Warby Parker is my Valentine

Photos provided by Warby Parker.
When I was contacted by Warby Parker to do this blog post, I almost leaped from the couch. I have been eyeing up this company for as long as I can remember. (Eyeing up, haha, puns.) When I was in 4th grade, it felt like all of my friends were getting glasses, and because I've always been excited about accessories, I always wanted them too. I don't think I realized until 8th grade (when I actually needed to get glasses) that most people didn't like hearing the news of, "You need glasses." How many times can I say glasses in one paragraph, geez.

Anyway, for today's Fashion Forward Fridays feature, I'm pleased to present, Warby Parker. This is an independent company that delivers right to you, which allows them to cut costs that boutiques cannot guarantee. They also donate glasses to people in need around the world. You buy a pair, they donate a pair. Nothing feels quite as good as knowing the company you're supporting is using all their resources to do good.

Currently, Warby Parker is introducing their Spring 2014 Collection as well as their Palm Canyon Collection for a limited time. The Spring Collection features eight new shapes and six new colors, while the Palm Canyon Collection is simply, their most-loved frames (Winston, Duckworth, Preston, and Wheeler) in a Palm Springs palette of mesquite, acacia, ironwood, and sand. These are my favorites from both collections, Palm Canyon on the left, Spring on the right.

Screenshot of my virtual try-on of Burke: Tennessee Whiskey.
If you're still skeptical about buying glasses online, here's some peace of mind for you. Warby Parker has a Virtual Try-On feature (shown on me above) to their website that allows you to upload your photo and see what the glasses would look like on you. But if that's not enough, they also allow you to pick five pairs and send them to you at no cost, to try-on and wear for five days and then send back. Then you can order which ones you felt best in, through their Home Try-On option. And those of you lucky enough to live in these areas, they also have some brick and mortar storesSeriously, they've thought of it all. Be sure to check them out!

I'm Not Here & Welcome New Friends!

Screenshot of my post on Sarah's blog.
Hello everyone! I am guest posting over on Sarah's blog, Coming Unstitched, today, while she enjoys her first few days of mommy-hood. You might already know Sarah, or remember her from when she guest posted here during my Fashion Week. Anyway, check out my post over there. I created three style boards on Polyvore for Valentine's Day, inspired by three classic romance movies, each one from a different decade. I'm pretty proud of it, so please head over there and let me know your thoughts!

As for those of you who are over here visiting from Sarah's blog, welcome!
I hope you stay a while and get to know me and begin following along with Chels & the City.
I suggest checking out some of my latest posts and heading over to my About page to learn more about me and this little space of the Internet. Hopefully you like what you see and we can be friends!

Chels Wears: Lips & Love

Sweater: Old Navy | Blazer: Boscov's | Lips Scarf & Black Skinny Jeans: WalMart
Red Heels: Wet Seal | Bow Ring: Charlotte Russe

Guys, I cannot pay attention about what to write because I keep staring back at the TV because of the Olympics. They make snow look cool and fun to play in! Except then I go out and realize that they must be freezing over in Sochi. Anyway, I think I like the winter games more because I actually watch more of the events, but that is the only reason I like winter haha

This outfit is, quite obviously, Valentine's Day inspired. And yes, there are shoulder pads in this blazer, because I don't mind a strong looking shoulder. Thank you Lady Gaga for bringing back the large shoulder look. Also, I bought these heels in Georgia in 2009 during a Habitat for Humanity trip. What? Yeah that happened, and I love them. Also, lips on my scarf? Yes, please - how could I not make this Valentine's outfit with great love-based items like these in my closet? How are you all dressing for the season?

Valentine's For Yourself!

Cute phrase, cute graphic & how do you show yourself love more than taking a nap.
Fabulous facial cleanser products from a great company focused on empowering their customers & making 100% natural products.
How gorgeous are these shoes!? I want them soooooo badly.
Such a cute ring and you should always show endless love to yourself, this gives you a little reminder!
I honestly have gone through hundreds of these water bottles. I cannot live without them!
I'm in love with this tee! Such a cute graphic and can easily be styled.
These notepads are so handy. I love Julie and all of her products. She's such an inspiration.
This book is fabulous for you marriage skeptics! I read it over the summer and loved it. It is sort of the sequel to Eat, Pray, Love and I cannot recommend it enough.

I'll admit. I do like Valentine's Day. Not the over the top, guys going crazy to impress their ladies kind of Valentine's Day, but the showing others you appreciate and care about them type of day. Every year I send some girlfriends a Valentine and give my brother and parents a little something, and of course MJ always plans something special, which I don't mind being spoiled with, but the most important person to show love to, honestly, is yourself. Single or not, it's always good to put yourself first some times and Valentine's Day is the perfect time to do so! So with that in mind, these are some of my picks for how to treat yourself this Valentine's Day. Enjoy!

Seek Love: Wine Cork Art

I think that the original pin for this project was one of the first pins I ever saw on Pinterest, but just recently did I realize that the link led to nothing. So to right that wrong and use up some wine corks that I've been hoarding, here's a DIY of making art out of some simple materials! Feel free to pin this one, so you actually have the steps for later!

First things first, you need to get all of your materials. Except for the wine corks (obviously) I got all of my materials from WalMart, but I'm sure that they are readily available at any craft store as well. Also, you'll have to save up corks, there are places online that sell them as "supplies" but where's the fun in that? What you'll need: corks, paint, brushes, water cup, pater towels, newspaper, pencil, piece of wood, glue, stencil letters, and something to mix your paints in that you don't mind ruining. I also encourage you to put on your favorite Pandora station because this project does take a while. I highly discourage you allowing your curious kitten to "help" with this, though.

The first step is to paint your board. I originally thought I'd just use a canvas but, didn't think it'd be sturdy enough to hold up - use your discretion on that one. Also, if your board doesn't have a hook on the back, this is the prime time to add that on as well. Let this fully dry before going to the next step. During this time, I went out for dinner, but that's certainly not required.

Step two: Lay out the letters you want on your painted board and paint them in. Or just freehand this - I never trust myself fully to freehand everything, so I outlined my letters. Step three: you'll want to arrange the corks in the shape you'd like. I went with a heart because of the phrase that I put on it and because, Valentine's day is coming up and sometimes I pretend to like that frilly holiday haha

Once you know where you want your corks to go, either mark their places on the painted board, or leave them and work on this step as you go along. Paint just the top of the cork and glue the opposite end to the painted board. For this I used Krazy Glue because it works really well and dries fast. I also painted my heart in an ombre effect to give it some interest.

To finish off your piece of art, make any touch ups that you want and let everything dry overnight before hanging it up. If you'd like, you could also coat your whole piece in a sealer, I personally didn't want to because I don't mind getting an aged look over time.

Valentine Playlist & Snail Mail

Hoping all of you are able to send and receive your fill of love today, or this weekend if you are like me and MJ who are always far too busy to ever do anything on the actual day of Valentine's Day. Remember, we're the couple who didn't exchange Christmas gifts until mid-January. But honestly, as cheesy as it sounds, everyday is Valentine's Day with him - relationships with distance are not for the faint of heart, people!

If you know me well, then you know that I am obsessed with greeting cards. I love sending them, receiving them, making them...I am all about this business. Hire me, Hallmark. Sometimes when I'm bored I go to Rite Aid (mind you, I live in the city so Rite Aid is literally my neighbor) just to browse through the greeting cards. Which I realize makes me lame, but I want to have my own greeting card company eventually and am currently toying with the idea of opening an Etsy shop for cards and random design work so I need to look at my competition!

So, this year for Valentine's Day I wanted to send some love to everyone, though not a realistic goal, I at least sent some to 25 households through personally designed cards. And by personally, I mean I made them in Photoshop and InDesign and made six different designs. Each one was based on beautiful simplicity and song lyrics, because honestly what else do you need in a Valentine? I hope they all made it to your mailboxes by today. I loved making these. First, coming up with the design and what pictures (which were all taken by my friend Hannah) and then buying the special paper and envelopes from a little stationary shop downtown called Weldin's. Sigh. I just loved this process and I hope those of you lucky enough to get one love them too. But for everyone who doesn't receive a snail mail Valentine, I'm sorry and you're welcome to consider this post as your own special Valentine. Add the Elton John, Your Song, to the list if you so desire in that case...that's always a goodie. Happy Valentine's Day with infinite X's & O's from me!

Valentine's by Neighborhood

Wow. Have I been busy. Thank you to everyone who sent their well-wishes after my "blogiversary" post, I appreciate you sticking around even though for the past week I haven't really given you a reason to do so. Anyway, besides that back and forth temps, something else is in the air in Pittsburgh. Love. With tomorrow being Valentine's Day and this weekend practically dedicated to the colors red and pink, for you last minute planners, here's some idea for you. And since I will never be able to top the greatest Valentine's Day date ideas that I posted last year....so this year, lets do it by neighborhood, not love languages. (Though I still believe they are the key to knowing anyone in your life and how to love them properly.)

First up...as always, Downtown. I'm in love with downtown, you obviously already know this. But I want you to be able to fall in love more with your Valentine this weekend so I suggest coming down for one of the many shows going on. My top picks for Valentine's Day are You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up! and Moulin Rouge - The Ballet. You Say Tomato is going on at the CLO Cabaret and is about a couple, with 10 years of marriage under their belts, who have just come to that point in their love life. People Magazine called this show "laugh out loud funny" so I'm sure it'll be a treat for you and your love. Or also downtown, Moulin Rouge - The Ballet is going on at the Benedum Center, which is a beautiful, artistic twist to a classic love story. Make sure that if you attend either of these shows, you also get in a lovely meal. One of my personal favorites is Six Penn, it happens to be right between these two venues as well. I'd suggest the salmon, because it's to die for and also "lent-friendly" if that's your thing too.

Cupid: as portrayed by Chelsea

Love is in the air, Pittsburgh! I'm sure many of you are probably going to celebrate this weekend, since Valentine's day falls on a Tuesday it's sometimes hard to make an outing happen during the week. So I will happily play Cupid and help you plan a Perfect Pittsburgh Valentine for this weekend! But for an added bonus I'm going to focus on the Five Love Languages because I fully believe in the fact that they are real and help make sure your message of "I love you," is heard loud and clear, especially on Valentine's day.

First off, if you're a newbie to the Five Love Languages world, fear not, I'll explain what each one means and how to really cater to which one most relates to your partner. Now keep in mind that these do not just apply to people who are in love. They remain true across the board on how you can best relate to anyone you love; your parents/children, roommate, boyfriend/girlfriend, siblings, best friends...anyone. Everyone has at least one primary way that they receive love the most. Although I'm not a fan of putting people in categories, I've never seen these five categories fail. The five love languages are; Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch.

Now first, if you're going to go along with any of the date ideas I have below, you'll have to figure out which one applies to your partner. With some people it is really obvious or easy to figure out which one applies most to them. But others, you just have to ask or seriously think about. When I was first introduced to the idea of the Five Love Languages I was in my first year of working as a camp counselor at Jumonville and everyone on staff had to figure out and then share which language most applied to them. This was a brilliant idea because for the entire summer we would be together and working very closely, we really needed to know how each of us felt loved and appreciated if we wanted to properly support each other and our campers once they arrived.

So how do you figure it out? Well first, imagine the human who you think really loves you. (When I first did this I imagined my brother, since he's basically my best friend.) Now, how do you know that person loves you...and don't try to say "because they're my mom and they have to," that's a cop-out, you've got to really think here. So for example, I know my brother loves me because; he encourages me to do great things (words of affirmation), he gives me meaningful gifts that he knows I'll really like (receiving gifts), he drives me places when I need a ride (acts of service), he always hugs me when I see him (physical touch), or he's always been there for me (quality time). While all of these statements may be true, whichever one of those holds true the MOST with you, is your primary love language. For me, the one that is the MOST TRUE, is that my brother has always been there for me, making me a quality time person. If none of this makes sense, there is a little test you can do on the Five Love Languages website you can take, but it only talks about a husband/wife relationship so, you can still take it if you're not married but just keep in mind the Love Languages are not JUST for married couples.

Now, onto some Pittsburgh-themed Valentine's Day date ideas......

From The Handmade Valentine website.
1) If your partner is a Receiving Gifts person: this might make them seem like a materialistic person or greedy, but that's far from the truth. This kind of person just feels loved the most when the person they love puts a lot of thought into the gifts they give. If you're in the Pittsburgh area and your significant other is this type of person, take them to The Handmade Valentine. This is a great workshop class that the Cultural Trust is sponsoring and is sure to be a fun time. You both can go together, make each other a variety of Valentine's and then exchange them. Not only will your gifts lover, love that you put thought into each Valentine you make, but it will be a memorable experience for both of you, making the valentines mean even more to your other half.

2) For the Acts of Service lover: this person cannot get enough of when the one they love offers to help them out, even if it's just some everyday chore, and broken commitments to helping out really hurt them. If your lover is this type of person...stay in! If you're not living together then invite them over to your place, or if they wouldn't mind, take over their kitchen. Make them relax (with their feet up, of course) while you prepare something yummy for the two of you, even if that means heating food up and just nicely setting the table. Transform your dining area into a nice restaurant and dress up a little...the extra effort will not go unnoticed! Then after dinner, you two can fight over who gets to clean up, the Acts of Service person usually likes to serve just as much as they like to be served.

From the City Data website.
3) The Words of Affirmation person: this person likes unsolicited compliments. Hearing why they are loved and admired mean everything to them, so obviously any insults are hard to forgive. For this person, I suggest going to any of the fabulous restaurants on Mt. Washington. Two important men in my life have taken me to the Georgetown Inn and the Grandview Saloon in the past, both fabulous. But any restaurant up there will give you a full view of this gorgeous city. You and your words of affirmation lover will at first be at a loss for words with that view, but it sets the mood. This is where the mushy part comes in...prior to going out, while you're still alone, write a letter to your partner about why you love them. Make. It. Specific. Really put your feelings out there, they'll appreciate the more you tell them. Then while waiting for your food, lean in close, pull out the letter and READ IT OUT LOUD to your words of affirmation lover. Make sure that you are genuine when you read it and that you are not making a show of it to the whole restaurant, that's just annoying to everyone. When you're finished, let your partner keep the letter so they can read it over and over again whenever they need a little pick-me-up. (You might want to bring a couple tissues too.)

4) The lover of Physical Touch: this does not mean that this person is all about the sexual aspect of your relationship and that's it, but they could be defined as that "touchy" person everyone knows. Hugs or a pat on the back go a long way with them and they appreciate when people are accessible to them. If your lover is this kind of person, as long as you're holding their hand throughout the date, they are happy. But, if you're in the Pittsburgh area, come downtown for a date night at The Rink at PPG Place. This Saturday they are having special prices for couples and the first 108 women get a free flower...awwww. And, don't use the excuse that you're a horrible skater, because your touch loving partner, will love holding your hand to skate and falling all over each other all night.

Part of The Priory's courtyard.
5) Finally, the Quality Time person: this person requires your full-undivided attention and needs to know that you are physically and emotionally supportive of them. The phrase of "being there" for this kind of person is exactly what they need. Failure to listen to this person is a big no-no. (Anyone who knows me, can obviously tell that I am the definition of a quality time person). If you're in a relationship with this kind of person and want to impress them for Valentine's Day, you need to be with them. But, if you're looking for something really special, check out The Priory for their Romance, Romance package. The Priory is a gorgeous little hotel that you would not expect to find in Pittsburgh and their newly renovated rooms are so luxurious and their outdoor courtyard is so cute. They have a few different and great packages to take advantage of, but I think the romance one would be perfect for Valentine's Day. However, what you do is not an issue with a quality time person, as long as they have the feeling of your full attention. Any of the date ideas mentioned above would work for this kind of person, because it's really not hard to impress someone who's only expectation of date night means that you will be there.

So what am I doing for Valentine's Day? MJ (my perfect boyfriend) and I are doing a double-dose of it this year. This weekend we are doing what I want to do, AKA: see a sappy chick flick (The Vow!!!!) and then next weekend we're doing what he wants, so I'm taking him to the Pittsburgh International Auto Show (I even scored us a discount). Since we rarely get to see each other, between our busy schedules and the distance...being able to spend two weekends in a row together is a big deal to us. And nothing says forever love like coupons and compromise.
