Living A Dream

December 2010
To be honest, I shouldn't have to write this post. But recently, I have read and listened to too much garbage on the Internet about interracial relationships. To the point where I literally had to remind myself that, yes, this is 2014. And that yes, being in an interracial relationship has been legal for the past 47 years.

I also know that there are couples who are not surrounded by love and support like MJ and I are, and I want each of them to know, we support you. I feel very blessed that the usually brief encounters of hate that MJ and I experienced together, are rare, and more recently, have been fewer and farther between. But the Internet loves to hate. And we have still experienced that hate in our real lives, from all angels. Why is there still hate in this world? Why does it matter if our skin is not the same?

MJ is the most amazing person I have ever met in my life. I am blessed to be his and call him mine. We aren't in this relationship to make a political statement or because we are "using" the other one for something. We are in this for love. We've been in it for love, and only love, for over four years.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today."
Mr. King, today and everyday, I thank you, and your followers, for paving a path for MJ and I to walk on with pride and hope for an even better tomorrow. But it hurts me to report, that we still haven't full-filled your dreams. And world, I have a dream that the beautiful children MJ and I will create one day, will not be judged by the color of the skin, but by the content of their character. Let's keep working, our job isn't finished until hate has vanished and everyone is truly equal.

  2. You guys are so cute together! I can't believe there's still hate like this in the world! It's 2014! Hate is a hard thing to get over, especially when it's done in front of your face, but just brush it off; they're the ignorant ones. You go on and live your lives knowing that you're happy and you found love! :)

    1. We tend to just ignore the looks we get and if someone makes an awkward comment to us, we usually blow it off in a way that obviously makes that person, and those around them, think twice about ever judging an interracial couple again.

  5. Amazing post Chelsea! Love is color blind and we can be the generation that teaches our children to see others as equals.

  6. This is a beautiful post, and it was sad to lose MLK so soon. I've always dated interracially- even though I'm married now, and, for the most part, have not had any problems with people saying anything. I never really thought about the fact that someone was of another race when I've dated either. There is a lot of work to do, though we have made some strides, and I am not really sure that the work will ever end; since the beginning of time people have had to deal with conflicts based on differences in religion, color of skin, race, beliefs, etcetera. -Jess L

    1. Thanks, Jess. I never really think about MJ's race either, like if he's going to meet a friend of mind he doesn't know yet, I don't feel the need to be like, oh hey he's black btw. People we actually know, aren't the ones who have a problem with us. It's just SOME (honestly very few) strangers we've run into who seem to have a problem with it. And of course all the haters on the Internet.

  7. Beautifully said, Chelsea! It is surprising that we still have to deal with these issues today. Regardless of others' views, walk with pride with MJ. Walk in love, hand in hand, heart in heart. Let love lead your way and through that love, you may bring others along. And if not, the issue is theirs, not yours.

Wishing you peace, love and joy,
